Elon Musk and his plan to build a city on Mars

Elon Musk, the billionaire behind the space company SpaceX, recently explained what their intentions in a few years. Although it may seem now science fiction, man has a viability plan to colonize and build a city of about 80,000 people . A plan announced in the Royal Aeronautical Society conference in London with which, in the future, and for $ 500,000, a person could “move” to the Red Planet.

As mentioned, today certainly seems impossible, but Musk explained what would be the basis of this crazy idea. For starters, the explorers would be transported to little by little, in groups of about 10 people at a time with the sole purpose of seeing the project’s viability. In other words, the first people should be willing to lose his life in order that the rest can finish colonizing Mars.

These early “colonizers” carry with them tons of building materials, transparent domes teams to build pressurized in a manner that will enable them to grow plants. If this first phase was a success and became a self-sufficient system, would the second block of mass colonizers.

Next to the first team will arrive fertilizer machines. Musk The idea is that these machines also produce methane and oxygen from carbon dioxide and nitrogen is in the atmosphere of Mars, further underground water ice on Mars.

Musk talks about a first trip through his company SpaceX. This would build a reusable spacecraft based on the Falcon 9, the prototype currently under construction called Grashopper. A plan that would cost an estimated U.S. $ 36 billion to be funded equally between private companies and governments. According to Musk:

It would have to spend money in the initial phase to establish a base on Mars. In this phase would seek the basics in place. It was the same in the case of the English colonies in America, then spent a large sum for all could begin. Consider that once there are regular flights to Mars could be obtained at a cost of half a million dollars for a single trip to the red planet. I think people would be willing to buy such a trip at a reasonable price.

Today is just an idea, but Musk is clear that could be done. In any case, if you are interested the price would not be suitable for every pocket. $ 500,000 as Musk are relatively affordable … at least for those potential 80,000 settlers “in the world that many people with sufficient capital and chutzpah to do it.”

Musk hopes for 2018 was made a working version of this first stage of the rocket Grashopper. From there, the journey to colonize Mars could become a reality.
